About
Empower Serendib

Sri Lanka was once called Serendib by Arab and Persian traders. Resplendent, rich in natural resources, the country was in a strategic location. High literacy, self-sufficiency in food, free education, and health care for all were the envy of many asian countries. The country was considered a model for development in South Asia.

Seventy years of corrupt leadership have devastated the country, leading to bankruptcy in 2022. Millions fell into poverty with the rural population affected the most. 52% of the rural population lives, below the national poverty line. 20% of the children are malnourished, and wasting and poor growth are major problems. The promised universal health care is challenged by a lack of resources and a shortage of medical personnel.

Agriculture is a foundational pillar that can stabilize its economy, ensure food safety, and empower communities to dignified livelihoods.

The organization hopes to:

  1. Build community-based initiatives in agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishing

  2. Support female heads of households in income-generating activities

  3. Build community infrastructure, sanitation, and shelter

  4. Support vulnerable, neglected societies to live dignified lives

  5. Expand rural health and medical services

  6. Improve education in rural areas and encourage youth participation in community activities
